Frans Kafka changed the way that westerners think. Or at least, he made a path for us to look more carefully. A path that had been clear to philosophies in the east for centuries. His influence is everywhere. He helped us remember that logic (though hugely valuable) is only part of what our minds can generate. His genius was a folding back of thought, to reveal the backside of logic.

I’ve paired his words with the image of a profoundly spiritual being across most of eastern cultures. 

Here is the poem, which is the same as the text written in the print:

You can hold yourself back from the sufferings of the world.

That is something you are free to do and it accords with your nature.

But perhaps this very holding back is the one suffering you could avoid.
