Narasimha is an incarnation of Vishnu. In his most well known story, Vishnu incarnated as the part-lion part-man Narahimsa in order to defeat a particularly powerful and protected enemy of the Devas (benevolent gods) named Hiranyakashipu.
In this story, Hiranyakashipu was granted a special divine protection which guarded against his death in many specific circumstances.
This divine protection was carefully crafted to eliminate the options of those who would have him killed.
Hiranyakashipu could not be killed during the day and he could not be killed during the night, He could not be killed while in the air and not on the ground, not by an animal and not by a human, not indoors and not outdoors.
Obviously this kind of all encompassing protection, presented a big problem for the Devas. So Vishnu incarnated as Narasimha (with a form neither animal nor human), and he sat in the threshold of his house (neither indoors nor outdoors), held the enemy on his lap (neither in the air nor on the ground) and disemboweled him at dusk (neither night nor day).
I love this story and that it embodies the essence of creative problem solving. The same creative problem solving that we have to employ every day in politics, law, business, art, sports and so on, by being perceptive, mindful, and adaptable to life’s circumstances.
