Many of you know that Santa Muerte is one of my favorite subjects for art. When I was young, I looked at a lot of art from the Renaissance and the Middle Ages. The depictions of death inspired by the Black Plague were always so compelling but also very frightening.
That’s part of why I love the way Mexico personifies death. It is distinctly not a vilification. In Western culture, we’re inundated with contradictory messages about death… It’s a natural aspect of life that we should embrace and be at peace with… but images of skulls and skeletons are almost always instruments of terror.
Perhaps more than any other culture, Mexico has so successfully turned depictions of death into objects of reverence, devotion, solemnity but also, positivity, playfulness and celebration.
We live in psychologically fraught times. I think the true mandate of our era is a resistance to cynicism and a cultivation of robust optimism.
And the army of cynicism is on the march!
