This print is another release to celebrate the Year of the Snake! It’s a combination of the Gadsden Flag and an image of the Greek mythological character Medusa.
The Gadsden flag was originally designed and flown during the revolutionary war. Using the Rattlesnake, which is unique to the Americas, as a symbol of American independence and a warning to the British.
There are many differing versions of Medusa’s story and even more interpretations of what she symbolizes, but it’s pretty clear that she is a powerful archetype of female anger.
Some versions of the story tell that she seduced Poseidon in Athena’s temple and her hideous disfigurement was Athena’s punishment for the crime. Other versions tell that she was raped by Poseidon. I can see why she’s mad.
She is also the mother of the winged horse Pegasus who emerged from her neck when Perseus decapitated her.
