It is a beautiful and undeniably wise piece that gives us and our dying loved ones, permission to be angry. We receive constant instructions to pass peacefully and gently with love and forgiveness. Ending your life with anger and turmoil in your heart seems vulgar even though we all recognize that a mind’s emotional experience at death is extremely textured to say the least. The idea of embracing rage at death is downright taboo.

The other wonderful thing about this poem for me is that it offers us insight on both a universal, macro scale and an individual one. From the pulled back vantage point of the first part we can all find ourselves and members of our families. At the end, it shifts and we are all invited into a deeply intimate room where a specific man is dying and his son is there with him.

As his father dies, Dylan Thomas is beginning to grieve, recognizing his father’s disappointment and love for him and his acceptance of his father’s rage is perhaps the most profound apology and forgiveness a son can offer.

Love.

Listen to the whole poem, read with the beautiful vibrato voice of Dylan Thomas himself, here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mRec3VbH3w

This is Certified Organic Intelligence Art! Everything about this print celebrates human creativity. This phrase “So it goes” is stated every time death is encountered in the story. Which is many times… more than 100. During the first dozen or so times we read it, the phrase comes across as a callous statement of the inevitability of death, a reminder of an uncaring universe. And it is that… As the book progresses however, and we find ourselves reading that line after every instance of death and dying, the words take on more meaning, they become a moment of reverence… A pause to contemplate death before moving on… A short prayer.

This is Certified Organic Intelligence Art! Everything about this print celebrates human creativity. In it, a young maiden named Thel is lamenting her mortality and in an effort to make sense of it, she talks to several other characters, The Lilly of the Valley (a small flower), a cloud, a worm, and a clod of dirt. She then passes into the underworld of the dead. After finding her own grave and more unsettling, existential questions, she shrieks and escapes back to her familiar valley and to her familiar mind.

The particular passage on this print is from the conversation she has with the Cloud. She recognizes the gift that the cloud offers to the world when it dies, in the form of rain, but she sees no purpose for herself when she dies:

“Without a use this shining woman liv’d,
Or did she only live to be at death the food of worms?”

And the cloud responds by saying,

“Then if thou art the food of worms, O virgin of the skies,
How great thy use, how great thy blessing!
