THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE ART:

This new pair of prints, The Four Horsemen and Four More Horsemen, can stand together as a diptych, or each can stand alone.

The Four Horsemen is a pretty straightforward interpretation of that section of the Book of Revelation. Done in the style of Albrecht Durer and other German Renaissance printmakers. Fans of Albrecht Durer will know that he did a version of the same image. It’s great.

The other print, the Four More Horsemen, is an updated interpretation that adds some of the newer existential problems that we face today.

I don’t hold a bleak view of our future. I’m a very optimistic person, more than most people I know. I’m also not fatalistic. It’s up to us. I think we’re going to survive, but we are facing some of the biggest challenges in the history of our species.

Optimism is pretty difficult. Especially nowadays. But it’s the most important thing that we can do when looking to solve problems, and all solutions to these terrible problems flow from it.

Love!

Shout out to my friend Martin Hammond who printed these. He’s one of the best screen printers in the country and it’s an honor to have him do this project. I borrowed a Durer book from him many years ago and I’ve used it a lot! I really abused it and he’s being very gracious about it. Thanks Marty.
