THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE ART:
This piece is part of the Marvelous Adventures series, which reimagines mythological narratives as American comic books. I’ve always loved the art style of classic comics—especially those from the 1970s and earlier—and these illustrations are particularly inspired by the Jack Kirby era of Marvel.
This print features Garuda—the courageous, loyal companion and mount of Vishnu in Hinduism. Garuda is a powerful figure who embodies courage, strength, and devotion. He’s revered across Asia, especially in Southeast Asia, though his significance varies by region.
Much like Pegasus in Greek mythology—originally one specific winged horse but later a term for all such creatures—Garuda refers to a single divine bird in Hinduism. When the figure crossed over into Buddhist traditions, however, Garudas became a class of golden-winged, magical birds.
Many prints in the Marvelous Adventures series draw directly from specific Hindu stories. This one does not. Instead, I’ve reimagined Garuda as an American bald eagle and paired him with his traditional enemies, the Nagas—divine serpent beings.
To me, this unlikely alliance reflects a hope that our own culture might benefit from a little less conflict and a little more cooperation.
