THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE ART:

I first created this design at the beginning of 2025, when the band Pearl Jam asked me to design a skateboard commemorating their participation in that year’s New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

Whenever I create pieces like this, I like to incorporate art and imagery inspired by the local culture, wildlife, and history. In this case, New Orleans offered a great deal of beautiful imagery to work with. I included a skeleton trumpet player, an alligator, and the Louisiana state flag.

I think the Louisiana state flag is one of the coolest in the country. I love when states use representational imagery rather than pure abstraction. This flag is especially strange and beautiful: it depicts a mother pelican piercing her own breast to feed her young with her blood. It’s a very old Catholic motif dating back to the Middle Ages, and it can still be found in cathedrals and liturgy throughout Europe. The image symbolizes Christ’s sacrifice for his people.

Attie and I recently traveled to New Orleans for the opening of my new Solo show there. That's why we are releasing this print now.

I also included the motto of New Orleans in both French and English within the print. I hope you enjoy it! It was a lot of fun to create!

This is Certified Organic Intelligence Art! Everything about this print celebrates human creativity. It begins with a real person using good old-fashioned paper and pencil to create the entire piece. It’s then locally printed by a skilled artisan and carefully packaged by our team before being delivered to you. We sincerely thank you for your support!
